Abstract

Current mobile communication systems with their fixed network infrastructures may be inadequate to accommodate future multimedia mobile services. We introduce an architecture of Broadband Personal Communication Networks (BPCN) as a future mobile communication network integrated with B-ISDN/ATM based infrastructures and propose two resource management schemes based on PVC and SVC concepts. We also propose a PVC based fast hand-off mechanism for realtime handoff calls which significantly reduces the control complexity in wired networks during a handoff call connection. We calculate the required PVC bandwidth in cellular and PCS environments when this handoff mechanism is adopted in the proposed resource management schemes. In the analysis, we consider the effects due to lack of both PVCs and wireless channels. Comparing our proposed method with the VCT method proposed by Acampora, we show that the proposed PVC based handoff mechanism is more bandwidth efficient while supporting fast handoff processings in wired networks.
