Abstract

In order to investigate the finishing effect of magneto-rheological fluid on specimen surfaces under magnetic field, a pin-on-disc apparatus was used to carry out the finishing experiment under different test conditions. Obtained test results showed that the magneto-rheological fluid was effective to reduce surface roughness of a steel surface on conditions that ensure a high removal rate, but the finishing surfaces of brass and aluminum specimens became considerably harsh. The surface roughness of the steel surface decreased with increasing magnetic field. Moreover, the empirical model proposed was capable of fitting the surface roughness and reflecting the influence of experimental conditions.
