A study on multicultural sensitivity of elementary students through multicultural chorus

Abstract

The advance of multicultural society focuses and interests on multicultural education in Korea society. Multicultural education needs to reestablish not for minority but for majority, and requires the change of recognition. Therefore, this study chooses to research on the multicultural chorus as a method for enhancing multicultural sensitivity of elementary students. The researchers directly instructed and researched chorus members in the elementary school. This study explored how the chorus affects the multicultural sensitivity and the change of students' sensitivity. Multicultural sensitivity through the chorus showed positive responses as followed; First, musical activity stimulates their creativity, and evokes emotional empathy which enables to consider and respect others. Second, they can admit and understand multicultural diversity. Third, they have the sense of belonging as members of chorus, respect themselves by expressing their role and thought, and find emotional stability. Finally, they practice cooperative activity. Chorus members can achieve common goals through positive interaction.
